Families are welcome to join us at the Governing Council AGM which will be held on 18 March 2020 at 6:30pm in the Victor Harbor High School staff lounge. The 2019 School Annual Report will be presented followed by nominations for the 2020-2021 committee and general election of office bearers held. In 2020 Victor Harbor High School has introduced a HOUSE system . We would like to provide all families the opportunity to meet with your House Team teachers who work closely with your students to support their learning every day.

·         5:30pm – 5:40pm – Meet the Team of Leaders – very brief introduction

·         5:40pm – 6:10pm – House Team teachers will be available for families to meet with them

VHHS & Catastrophic Weather warning - 20 Nov 2019

Victor Harbor High School will be open for staff and students to attend on Wednesday 20 November 2019.

All buses travelling through declared catastrophic districts (Fleurieu is part of the Mount Lofty Ranges area which is a declared catastrophic district) are cancelled for this day.

Your students should have received letters this week via primary schools or mentor teachers regarding the meeting at 6:30pm on 13 November about the Materials and Services charges for 2020.

         SPELD SA is presenting free workshops in Yankalilla suitable for parents of children in Preschool, Junior, Primary and Secondary School on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th October 2019. These workshops may also be beneficial for SSOs who are welcome to attend.


Numbers are limited so book early.

         1. Dyslexia: What it is and how to help at home - Presenter: Sandy Russo

This session looks at the problems encountered by students with Dyslexia (Friday), Dyslexia and Dyscalculia (Saturday), and the ways in which they can be assisted. Each family attending will receive a copy of the AUSPELD Understanding Learning Difficulties Guide to take home as a reference guide.

 2. Hearing Sounds in Words (Phonemic Awareness) – a key literacy skill - Presenter: Sandy Russo

This hands-on workshop will investigate the relationship between ‘hearing sounds in words’ and the development of literacy – reading, writing and spelling. Participants will leave equipped with:

•    An insight into the numerous phonemic (sound) aspects of literacy 
•    Strategies to support your child’s literacy development
•    Games and activities to nurture your child’s literacy development

Suitable for parents of students struggling to spell and read.

4. Using a six box in planning – all genres – all year levels –

Writing involves many processes and by the time pen touches paper and the challenge of working out how to spell the first word or even which word to use is reached by a struggling writer, the rest of their ideas have disappeared from their memory.

This session focuses on how a six box structure can be used when planning any writing task in a paper based form and in PowerPoint. The six box structure is also easily used in a PowerPoint platform which helps students with working memory issues. You will leave the session with the knowledge of how to use a six box and the different strategies and programs that Sandy finds useful with the students she works with.

Number sense is the basis for mathematical understanding and development. Numbers follow patterns! Patterns are fun!

Through hands-on activities, use of concrete materials, and considering  the many ways we use and apply number in our daily activities, participants will investigate and develop a resource of simple fun ways (including strategies, activities and games) they apply or use at home and in the community to assist their child master a solid understanding of number. Brain research reveals that emotions, such as anxiety, anger and depression, place us in a state of alert - fight or flight – impacting our state of alertness and ability to concentrate and learn. 

This practical workshop, through interactive activities, provides support for parents to equip children with the strategies to develop optimism, positive self-esteem, resilience and a growth mindset. These aim to assist them to overcome obstacles, meet challenges assuredly, feel included and happy, and continually learn, developing into calm, optimistic and self-assured young people.
