Program Overview: Victor Harbor High School Specialist Sports – Australian Rules Football Program

Program Structure:

The Specialist Sports Australian Rules Football program at Victor Harbor High School is designed for students in Years 9 to 11, focusing on developing both skills and knowledge in the sport. The program comprises four lessons per week, with a strong emphasis on practical engagement and teamwork. Practical and game theory sessions are broken in male and female groups to focus on team specific development.

Duration: Available to students in Years 9, 10, and 11.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Practical Sessions:

    • These sessions are dedicated to skill development, fitness training, and tactical understanding. They are conducted in male and female groups.

  • Theory Session:

    • This session may be conducted in either year-level classes or male and female groups, focusing on the game strategy, nutrition, skill development and individual development plans.

Key Aspects of Each Year Level in the Specialist Sports Australian Rules Football Program

Year 9

  • Umpire Development Course: Students will participate in an introductory course that covers the basics of umpiring, including rules, positioning, and decision-making. This course aims to enhance their understanding of the game from an officiating perspective.

  • Nutrition for Play: Students will learn about the importance of nutrition and how it impacts performance. Topics will include meal planning, hydration strategies, and the role of macronutrients in athletic performance.

  • Player Development with Henley High School Specialist Sports Football Program: Collaboration with Henley High School provides students with additional resources and coaching to develop their football skills, tactical awareness, and overall game understanding.

 Year 10

  • Introduction to Sports Training: This course covers the fundamentals of sports training, including strength and conditioning, skill drills, and recovery techniques. Students will learn how to design and implement training programs for themselves and others.

  • Taping Course: Students will be taught the basics of athletic taping, focusing on injury prevention and management techniques that can be applied during training and matches.

  • Player Development with Henley High School Specialist Sports Football Program: Continued partnership with Henley High School allows students to further refine their skills and gain insights from experienced coaches.

  • Player Connections: This initiative includes participating in games against Western Australian school, Governor Stirling, fostering competitive experience and camaraderie.

  • West Beach Football Leadership Development Camp: Students will attend a leadership camp designed to build teamwork, communication skills, and personal leadership qualities, essential for future roles in sports.

Year 11

  • Sports Industry and Future Careers Camp to Melbourne: This immersive experience exposes students to various careers in the sports industry. Activities may include visits to professional sports clubs, talks from industry professionals, and workshops that provide insight into pathways within sports management, coaching, sports science, and more.
