Supporting Learners @ Victor Harbor HS

Victor Harbor High School’s Intervention and Support program is guided by the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD) http://www.decd.sa.gov.au/quality/default.asp?navgrp=191  statement “Effective organisations acknowledge performance concerns and seek alternative solutions to achieve quality outcomes. When improvement planning and strategies don’t achieve the desired results or meet standards, we are required to provide the necessary intervention and support to ensure improvement.” (DECD Improvement and Accountability Framework).

The staff & I spent last year focussed on

  • undestanding the concept of 3 Waves of Intervention & Support,
  • improving our system to identify learners in the waves (Referral Process),
  • setting standards in achievement, attendance and behaviour
  • engaging knowledgeable & experienced staff to undertake intervention & support approaches in the school.

Wave 1 includes all mainstream classes and there are several Wave 2 spaces in the school which support learners & these include the Nunga Room (Mark Nethercott), the Research Centre (Mandy Kerby), FLO (Jen Vonic-Joyce), Student Services (Lindsey Cowper) and the Wave Room (Arran Stierman). The Disability Unit is a Wave 3 space and is led by Jeff Collins.

The Wave Room is one ‘alternative solution’ at Victor Harbor High School and is focussed on moving learners (Wave 2)  who are not making progress with their peer group , back to progressing with their class (Wave 1). It is our belief that this will be achieved through targeted instruction guided by an Individual Learning Plan and supplemental numeracy and literacy programs such as Multi-lit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy) and Ten Ticks-Numeracy. At present Arran Stierman with Wave Room staff is actively shaping Individual Learning Programs for Wave Room students.

At the same time we are also focussed on learners who would benefit from increased challenge within their curriculum. Identified students can be fast tracked and teachers professional learning includes how they can provide extension and challenge to learners to achieve at their highest potential.

You are warmly invited to contact me if you would like further information about how we are supporting ALL learneers at Victor Harbor High School.

Until next time ............
