An exciting ARTS time ahead

As a principal it is sometimes difficult not to show one's passion for particular areas of the curriculum given we all began as teachers of a particular subject or two. My majors were Physical Education, History & Geography and I enjoyed teaching these subjects. Having said this, I have often wondered why I didn't become a Drama teacher. So, I have to admit, I do have a soft spot for the Visual & Performing Arts.

In recent times I have observed an increased interest in this area of the curriculum and I'm certainly looking forward to attending Drama, Music & Visual Arts events which are currently scheduled for this year. I really enjoy these events as I  enjoy seeing the PRIDE families feel when they see their children's achievements. I have observed many benefits of studying in this curriculum area and here are a few;

It can stimulate CREATIVITY in problem solving, challenge perceptions about our world and about ourselves, it can be an outlet for emotions, thoughts, and dreams that otherwise are difficult to express. It is a way to explore a new role and in a safe way try out and experiment with various personal choices and solutions to very real problems-problems from one's own life. Like all the arts, Drama allows students to communicate with and understand others in new ways. Adapted from http://www.childdrama.com/why.html

If you have a chat with Drama Teachers, Richard Greig or Sarah Johnson they will acknowledge the value of studying the Visual & Performing Arts. These two accomplished teachers have been rewarded and acknowwledged for their expertise. Richard was recently nominated for an SA Teaching Award and has been invited by the SACE Board to be a Moderator for Stage 2 Drama performances across South Australia and the Northern Territory. Sarah was successful in achieveing a Bell Shakespeare Company scholarship and is an active local community thespian.

I look forward to participating and seeing you at some Drama events which are happening for our students (including the VHPS) and their families;
